Stores confirm arrangements around The Queen’s funeral

Shares

A number of shops have announced they will be closing their doors or limiting service on Monday 19th September, the day of Her Majesty The Queens’ funeral.

Here’s what some retailers have announced so far. We’ll update this article as soon as we hear details from more of our favourite shops.

John Lewis and Waitrose

A spokesperson for John Lewis and Waitrose said: “The John Lewis Partnership will close its department stores and Waitrose shops on the day of the funeral of Her Majesty The Queen.”

They added: “When full details of the funeral are confirmed, an exception may be a very limited number of Waitrose stores on the route of the funeral procession to serve members of the public who we know will be lining the route for many hours.

“These shops will, however, close for the funeral itself.”

Andrew Murphy, chief operating officer at The John Lewis Partnership, commented: “We are deeply saddened by the death of Her Majesty The Queen.

“We will be closing our stores on the day of her funeral as a mark of respect, and because we believe this is the right thing to do for our partners and customers.”

Sainsbury’s and Argos

A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said: “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

“In honour of Her Majesty and so our colleagues can pay their respects, all Sainsbury’s supermarkets and Argos stores will be closed on Monday 19th September.

“This includes groceries online and Argos fast track delivery.

“Our convenience stores and petrol filling stations will be open from 5pm-10pm to allow our customers to pick up essential items, while select stores in central London will open to serve those attending the funeral in person.

“We thank our customers for their understanding.”

Booths

Booths confirmed they would be closing their stores on the day of Her Majesty’s funeral.

A spokesperson said: “Our heartfelt sympathy and thoughts are with the royal family at this sad time.

“As a mark of respect all Booths stores will be closed on Monday the 19th of September while we join the country in mourning.”

Marks and Spencer

A spokesperson for M&S said: “On Monday 19th September we will cease customer delivery services and close M&S owned stores in the UK for the entire day, with some limited exceptions.

“Due to the millions of expected mourners travelling on the day we will have a small number of stores open in the London and Windsor area to support those paying their respects to buy food and refreshments.

“These stores will close by 10.30am and remain closed for the rest of the day, except for the four stores closest to Westminster Abbey and St George’s Chapel, Windsor, which will reopen after the funeral service.

“Stores operated by our franchise partners in key travel hubs and public service locations, such as hospitals, are expected to remain open.”

B&Q

CEO Graham Bell said: “As a mark of respect for the State Funeral for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and to offer our colleagues the opportunity to pay their respects, we have taken the decision to close all our UK stores on Monday 19th September.”

B&Q’s click and collect and home delivery services will also be temporarily suspended on the day.

All stores will re-open as normal on Tuesday 20th September.

Ikea

A spokesperson for Ikea said: “Out of respect for Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and to allow our co-workers to pay their respects, all Ikea stores and business operations across the United Kingdom will be closed on Monday 19th September.”
