Her Majesty The Queen will visit Cheshire next week, with a lunch at Chester Town Hall preceded by the official opening of Storyhouse, which will itself be preceded by the official opening of the Mersey Gateway Bridge.

The monarch will be accompanied throughout her visit by the Duchess of Sussex, the recently married Meghan (nee Markle).

It is understood to be the first official engagement involving just Her Majesty and her new granddaughter-in-law which means the event is likely to attract not only large crowds but also the eyes of the media across the world.

The visit follows another royal visit earlier this year, when Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall stopped by Styal and Congleton. (Read more.)

On The Queen’s upcoming visit, the Chester Chronicle reports: “Staff in Storyhouse were aware a VIP will be visiting that day but didn’t know the identity of the mystery visitor until today.”

The newspaper informed readers: “Guests have been invited there that day where a short performance will take place concluding around 1pm.”

Storyhouse welcomed an incredible 1 million customers through its doors in its first twelve month, making it officially one of the UK’s largest cultural attractions.

Other headline figures from the venue’s first year include selling more than 180,000 tickets to theatre shows and events, plus over 250 cinema screenings with 30,000 cinema tickets purchased.

Storyhouse is Chester’s £37m cultural centre, which incorporates a theatre, library and cinema. It launched in May 2017.

The Mersey Gateway Bridge opened to traffic just after midnight on the morning of Saturday 14th October 2017.

It is a six lane toll bridge over the River Mersey between the towns of Runcorn and Widnes. Its aim is to relieve congestion on the ageing Silver Jubilee Bridge.

The Queen and Duchess of Sussex will visit Cheshire on Thursday 14th June 2018.
