Despite Theresa May ruling out calling another snap general election, the local Conservative party in Crewe and Nantwich has prepared itself by selecting its candidate.
With some suggesting that we could see another general election as early as November, Conservatives in the ‘hyper-marginal’ seat of Crewe and Nantwich are ready for it, as yesterday they unveiled Kieran Mullan as their parliamentary candidate.
The seat was taken from the Conservative party at the last general election, when the Conservative’s Edward Timpson (who had held the seat since 2008) lost to Labour’s Laura Smith by just 48 votes.
Labour MP Laura Smith has raised eyebrows this week, with her speech at the Labour party conference in Liverpool.
Mr Mullan was seen out and about in the constituency on Tuesday (25th Sept), visiting Wybunbury Delves CE Primary School with education secretary Damian Hinds.
Kieran is a doctor by profession, and currently works in an A&E department as well as in health policy for the National Clinical Audit Commissioner.
He contested the Wolverhampton South East feat for the Conservatives in 2017, and Birmingham Hodge Hill in 2015.
In addition to his work and political commitments, he is also a volunteer special constable.
In a video posted on Twitter yesterday, he said: “I’ve had a great first day so far.
“This morning I was at Wybunbury Delves Primary School with the education secretary Damian Hinds, hearing about the great work they’re doing with the children there.
“Then we went to the YCA and I saw the fantastic facilities they’ve got to offer people struggling with various different challenges.”
Kieran remarked: “I really want to be a hands-on kind of candidate,” whilst holding up a bin bag full of litter, and explained: “I’ve just been picking up a little bit of rubbish at Leighton Green.”
Kieran finished his video by saying: “My first day has been jam-packed… I’m really looking forward to the rest of the rest of the week as I get stuck in to being the Conservative candidate for Crewe and Nantwich.”
