Wilmslow Symphony Orchestra’s Dermot Gault writes…
In Wilmslow Symphony Orchestra’s last concert we tackled one of the most demanding works in the repertoire, Mahler’s epic Ninth Symphony. (Read more, here)
For our final concert of the season we’re offering a chance for listeners to relax (which doesn’t mean that there’ll be less work for us…)
Our ‘Last Night of the Proms’ includes old favourites such as Elgar’s First Pomp and Circumstance March, Henry Wood’s Fantasia on British Sea Songs, and Parry’s Jerusalem.
Vaughan Williams’ rousing English Folk Song Suite, originally written for military band, is right at home in this company.
2018 is the anniversary of the death of Hubert Parry, composer of Jerusalem. It’s also the centenary of the birth of Leonard Bernstein, whose tuneful Candide overture opens the programme.
The meat in the sandwich is Copland’s wonderfully fresh Appalachian Spring.
For this concert we are delighted to welcome back Tom Newall (pictured above), who conducted us so brilliantly in the Mahler, along with guest leader Madeleine Fitzgerald.
As always, the venue is the Evans Theatre in Wilmslow Leisure Centre.
There is plenty of convenient free parking, and the theatre itself has comfortable seating and good disabled and restricted mobility access.
The tiered auditorium ensures that everyone can see as well as hear clearly.
The concert takes place on Saturday 16th June at 7.45pm in Wilmslow Leisure Centre.
Tickets cost £12 (concessions, £10 / under 18s, £2) and may be obtained from the ticket secretary (01925 756 144) and on the door.
