Work will start this week on improvements to a historic narrow lane in Chester which once led to the yard of the city’s main coaching inn.
Cheshire West and Chester Council (CWAC) said improvements to Feathers Lane in Chester – off Bridge Street – will include pavements and landscaping as well as a new commercial bin store, – on land belonging to the Grosvenor Estate, and a domestic bin storage area.
Cllr Richard Beacham, CWAC cabinet member for regeneration, said: “The work at Feathers Lane follows on from improvements we’ve already made to Leen Lane and Pierpoint Lane.
“Protecting and reinvigorating these historic lanes is really important for the city.
“The location of Feathers Lane next to Chester Rows means that we need to mitigate against the fire risk that bins might pose.
“This project is a really good opportunity to support incremental improvements to areas of the city, whilst making sure that they can still serve a practical purpose safely.”

Feathers Lane is one of four surviving medieval lanes in Chester – Godstall Lane, Feathers Lane, Pierpoint Lane and Leen Lane.
A blue plaque on Feathers Lane reads: “Feathers Lane – this lane led to the yard of the Feathers Hotel, Chester’s principal coaching inn in the early 19th century.
“Twenty coaches left here every day. The Feathers, situated just to the north of the lane, was demolished in 1866.”
The improvement work is scheduled for completion by the end of March.
