Despite assurances last night that the show would go ahead, tonight’s Tom Jones gig at Chester Racecourse has now been postponed due to the singer’s ill-health.
Chester Racecourse posted on their website: “It is with regret that we have to postpone Tom Jones’ performance at Chester Racecourse this evening.
“This show will be rescheduled for Sunday 12th August. All tickets will remain valid for the rescheduled date.
“If you are unable to attend the rescheduled date, refunds will be available at point of purchase.”
The statement continued: “Sir Tom Jones has a bacterial infection for which he is being treated in hospital.
“The condition is being well managed and we are hoping for a speedy recovery.
“He is extremely sorry and disappointed not to be able to perform tonight, and sincerely apologises for inconveniences caused to the audience and all those who are involved in the event.”
A spokesperson for promoter LHG Live said: “We are naturally disappointed that tonight’s Concert at Chester Racecourse in unable to go ahead as scheduled.
“Tom’s health is the priority and we all wish him a speedy recovery back to full fitness as soon as possible.
“We are pleased that the show has been re-scheduled for Sunday 12 August and we look forward to seeing everyone then for a spectacular evening.
“All hospitality guests will be contacted directly by Chester Racecourse for revised arrangements or to answer any questions you may have.
“Thank you for your support and understanding as we revise plans.”
Sir Tom’s show in Chichester last night was also cancelled due to the singer’s illness.
Posting on Twitter, Sir Tom said: “I am so sorry for cancelling last night’s show in Chichester, it’s the worst feeling having to let down everyone who was coming as well as everyone who may have been involved with the event.
“I know many of you travel considerable distances and make plans with friends and family that take a lot of effort, and it is so disappointing when things don’t go right.”
He added: “Although I can’t perform again tonight at Chester Racecourse, the good news is that we can get another date in Chester on August 12, so hopefully I will see you there.
“Until then, a sincere thank you for your support and understanding.”
