The Lord Mayor of Chester, Cllr Sherin Akhtar, is inviting residents to join her at Chester Cathedral on Sunday 9th November 2025, at 10.15am, as she leads the city’s Act of Remembrance.
She will also led the Armistice Day Act of Remembrance Service on Tuesday 11th November 2025 at 10.50am at Chester Cathedral Gardens on St Werburgh Street.
This year’s Remembrance Sunday will be particularly significant as it will also commemorate the 80th Anniversary of Victory in Europe and Victory over Japan.
Remembrance Sunday is a chance to remember all those lost in World War One as well as subsequent conflicts, and to show support to everyone who has served – past and present.
“It is an honour to be part of this year’s events, especially at a time when many parts of the world remain affected by conflict and unrest, Cllr Akhtar said.
“Now more than ever, it is vital that communities come together to honour and remember those who have been killed or injured, as well as those who continue to face the harsh realities of conflict today.”
She added: “Chester has long been a proud garrison city, rich in military history.
“Remembrance Sunday offers a powerful moment for us all to pause and give thanks to our brave service men and women, and to the civilians who have supported them — past and present — for their courage, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment.”
Chair of Cheshire West and Chester Council, Cllr Bob Bisset, said Remembrance Sunday offered an opportunity for Cheshire West residents to come together and pay their respects.
“On this 80th anniversary year of VE and VJ Day, Remembrance Sunday is our chance to give thanks to everyone who served and who helped re-build our communities after the world wars.
“In these globally troubled times, it is also important that residents come together to remember and thank those who continue serve in the British and Commonwealth Armed Forces today.”
Chester Cathedral is the central point for all of the city’s remembrance events and all members of the community are welcome to attend regardless of faith, beliefs or background.
