Winsford town centre is set to get a radical makeover shortly as ambitious plans for its redevelopment have been announced this week.
Construction will begin shortly, following approval of additional funding for the scheme from Cheshire West and Chester Council (CWAC).
The authority has allocated further funding of £500,000 to the project, ensuring it can go ahead despite increasingly challenging economic conditions.
The council-led redevelopment scheme will provide new space for anchor tenants in Winsford town centre and create new public spaces for events and attractions.
The council says it wants to continue building on the town’s cultural programme too, following the success of Winsford Creates and Cine-window.
Site preparation works are already underway, and the council is preparing to sign contracts, meaning work should begin in a matter of weeks.
It’s expected the work will be completed be late 2024.
Cllr Richard Beacham, CWAC cabinet member for inclusive growth, economy and regeneration, said: “We’re delighted that the council’s bold plans for the regeneration of Winsford town centre are about to become a reality.
“I know this is a really important project for people in the town, who are excited to see it get underway.
“This redevelopment will unlock the economic potential of Winsford town centre, providing opportunities for new and existing businesses and creating new spaces for events and visiting attractions that will bring footfall into the town.”
The project represents investment of more than £22 million on top of the £21m the council invested in acquiring the site in 2018.
Some of the cash is coming from a £10 million grant from the government’s Future High Streets Fund.
So far, B&M and Costa have signed leases to occupy the new units being created, and ongoing leases with many of the existing tenants have been secured.
