Tatton MP Esther McVey has thrown her weight behind a campaign to get more women and girls exercising, and is urging local groups to apply for funding to help people get fit.
Ms McVey is backing Sport England’s This Girl Can campaign and hopes groups and organisations across the area will get involved.
The campaign was launched in 2015 after research found that 75% of women wanted to do more sports or exercise but were put off by fear of being judged on ability or appearance.
Ms McVey said: “I’m proud to support Sport England’s This Girl Can campaign to get more women and girls active… there is something for everyone if they want to take part, regardless of age or ability.”
She added: “I’d urge local groups and organisations, not just sports clubs, but any community groups who work with women or girls and want to arrange activities or classes to apply for funding… I will offer any support they need in making their applications.”
Since the campaign began, nearly three million women have taken up more sport or physical activity.
This Girl Can community funding provides grants of between £300 and £10,000 for groups and projects across England that are creating opportunities to get women moving.
Applications close on 25th February and funding is available for up to 50 groups in total.
