Tarporley man writes book following epic fundraiser

A Tarporley resident took on the challenge of his life last year when he cycled around the entire coast of Britain to raise money for charity.

50-year-old Gareth Lyon set off from Tarporley to begin his epic 4,000-mile journey in mid-May and completed it in early July.

So far, his epic cycling adventure has brought in donations of more than £50,000 for Prostate Cancer UK.

Now, Gareth has written a book – entitled Around Britain In 50 Days: A Cycling Adventure – about his experiences which he hopes will raise even more money for the charity.

The book chronicles his preparation (including motivation, training and logistics) as well as containing a diary of the journey and its after-effects, plus details of money raised and photos from the rides.

All proceeds from the book will go to Prostate Cancer UK.

Gareth said: “It is hopefully a great motivator for people looking to take on a challenge, especially as we begin the new year.”

He was joined by friends, family and colleagues at various points along his challenge – many of whom cycled with him for sections of the ride.

One of those supporting him was his dad, Bill, who celebrated his 73rd birthday during the ride.

Bill said: “I was very proud to be able to support Gareth on this challenge.

“I’ve done it twice before, when he did Lands End To John O’Groats and around Wales.”

Gareth added: “I was delighted when dad agreed to join me by driving the all-important support vehicle.

“When we lead such busy lives it’s so special to spend precious time together.”

Commenting about his cycle challenge, he said: “It was really tough at times but incredibly satisfying to complete such an epic challenge in my 50th year.”

Among the things described in his book, Gareth talks about his training regime, route planning, logistics and meeting world record endurance cyclist Mark Beaumont.

He’s also included a daily insight into his cycle ride – with a ‘warts and all’ insight into the trials, tribulations and joys of riding around Britain’s coast.

Gareth’s motivation for taking on the challenge was having experience within his own family of prostate cancer.

He said prostate cancer affects one in eight men, and that this increases to one in three for men who have a family history of this dreadful disease.

His book is available online and can be purchased via Amazon.
