Historical fiction author Charles Cordell debuted his novel God’s Vindictive Wrath at Nantwich Bookshop & Coffee Lounge on High Street in Nantwich on Friday (20th January).

The event took place on the evening before the annual Holly Holy Day ‘Battle of Nantwich’ re-enactment.

Holly Holy Day traces its roots back to the 17th century, and the four-year-long first English Civil War between the Parliamentarians (Roundheads) and the Royalists (Cavaliers).

Charles Cordell was brought up in Cornwall, near Falmouth, and spent time as an archaeologist before joining the British Army.

He served in a range of operational roles including warfighting, counter-insurgency, counter-terrorism, and humanitarian on the ground in the Middle East, South Asia, and Northern Ireland, plus a number of diplomatic posts overseas.

His new novel is set in the first weeks of the English Civil War.

October, 1642, Warwickshire. 30,000 men have gathered to determine the fate of nations and to pursue their own ideals and enmities through brutal and bloody combat. Many have never handled a weapon or strayed far from their native shire.

Charles Cordell gave an informative talk to an appreciative audience during the evening event.

He was also at the bookshop on the Saturday morning of the battle re-enactment to sign copies of his novel.

Denise Lawson from Nantwich Book Shop & Coffee Lounge, said: “A huge thank you to Charles Cordell for coming to Nantwich and talking about his book God’s Vindictive Wrath and for braving the icy conditions on Saturday morning, selling his book.

“It was a sold out event and we look forward to his return visit next year.”
