The leader of Cheshire West and Chester Council, has written to Liverpool civic leaders to offer support for their proposal to host the Eurovision Song Contest 2023.
Cllr Louise Gittins wrote to Liverpool mayor Joanne Anderson and Liverpool City Region metro metro Steve Rotherham to wish them well in their id to host the tournament.
Cllr Gittins said: “We know that Liverpudlians will rise to this challenge with enthusiasm and commitment.
“People across Cheshire are also cheering you on and looking forward to participating in an amazing event.”
Liverpool is up against Glasgow to host the 2023 contest, after the UK agreed to take on hosting responsibilities on behalf of Ukraine.
Organisers felt it was unsafe to host the annual competition in Ukraine next year due to Russia’s ongoing invasion of the country.
The city that will host the contest will be revealed on BBC One’s The One Show at 7pm tonight (7th October).
CWAC’s letter of support
Dear Jo and Steve,
On behalf of Cheshire West and Chester Council, I want to express our support for your proposal to host the Eurovision Song Contest 2023.
Liverpool is such a proud cultural city, and globally recognised for its contribution to the music of the world. It is a fitting place to host the world’s most popular music event.
It has been heart breaking to see the devastation of Ukraine and the tragedies inflicted on its people.
We hope one day to see Eurovision return to celebrate the liberation of Ukraine within its internationally recognised borders.
Eurovision held in Liverpool, with the strong support of your twin city Odessa, would be a further opportunity for this country and region to stand shoulder to shoulder with the people of Ukraine, by celebrating the music of Europe and the World.
The City of Liverpool has the infrastructure and track record, and we know that Liverpudlians will rise to this challenge with enthusiasm and commitment.
People across Cheshire are also cheering you on and looking forward to participating in an amazing event.
With best wishes
Councillor Louise Gittins – Leader of Cheshire West and Chester Council
