Cheshire East Council elections 2023 – Poynton West and Adlington candidates

Shares

We’ve asked all of the candidates standing for election to Cheshire East Council to provide our readers with a short introduction to themselves.

We’ll publish these daily for all 52 council wards (in alphabetical order) in the build up to the local elections on 4th May 2023.

You can view all of the Cheshire East Council candidate submissions together by clicking here.

Listed below are all of the candidates seeking your vote in the Poynton West and Adlington ward.

Voters in Poynton West and Adlington can select two candidates to represent them on Cheshire East Council.

Poynton West and Adlington candidates:

  • Michael Beanland (Conservatives)
  • Kathy Booth (Green Party)
  • Amy House (Labour)
  • Tony Penny (Labour)
  • Mike Sewart (Conservatives)

Michael Beanland (Conservatives)

I have lived in Poynton for 38 years. I have served as a Conservative councillor for Poynton at both town council and Cheshire East Council.

As a parent and governor I value the local primary and secondary schools that have educated our children.

I have worked in finance for 48 years and value strong financial planning.

My experience, serving on planning committees for both councils has given me input into preservation of greenbelt in both Poynton and Cheshire East planning applications.

Serving on Cheshire Fire Authority has shown how lucky we are to have a superb fire prevention and rescue service in Cheshire East.

Locally, I and my conservative council colleagues are continuing to push for retention and improvement of the local bus service and ensure Labour administration’s plan to impose bin charges, that will only result in increased fly tipping, are avoided.

Kathy Booth (Green Party)

I have been a Green Party member for about 10 years now, but I have been a crusader for most of my life when it comes to the environment and animal welfare.

My aim is to support the campaign against the removal of the trees at Poynton Pool which is a

site of biological importance and also a habitat of principal importance.

There is insufficient rationale for doing this, and so I am standing to protect the pool and its trees.

I believe that 20’s plenty, and I would look to challenge Cheshire East Council to provide Poynton residents with safer roads.

I intend to re-start the campaign for traffic calming measures on the back lanes of Poynton and Adlington, which was previously rejected by the council without any discussions with residents,

despite having received over 100 objections against the withdrawal of these safety measures.

Amy House (Labour)

I am director of a social enterprise working with local and central government on climate change.

I am a passionate campaigner for the environment and for women’s rights.

I am pragmatic and willing to challenge the status quo and speak on behalf of those less able.

Tony Penny (Labour)

I am very active in local organisations, and in my local neighbourhood as a Covid-19 coordinator and in Neighbourhood Watch.

I am a magistrate and a school governor, and I campaign for more school places – demand for which far exceeds availability.

I have worked in the NHS and in local government.

Mike Sewart (Conservatives)

I am a microbiologist by profession and a retired quality specialist in the pharmaceutical industry.

I have lived in Poynton since the 1970s and have represented Poynton West and Adlington at Cheshire East Council since 2015.

A long time campaigner for the relief road, I am pleased to see it open and am now fighting for a ban – except for access – on HGVs through Poynton centre.

Other key issues are the fights to stop the mass felling of trees in Poynton Park, keeping the waste site at Anson Road open and trying to end the anti-social behaviour that has affected some of our play areas.

My main motivation to be a councillor is to communicate people’s problems to Cheshire East Council.

I might not be able to solve the problem but I may know the man who can at the borough’s HQ.
