Charity helps woman take the lead with dog walking business

A woman from Derbyshire, who was looking for part-time work while studying, has been supported by a local charity to set up her own business.

Zoe, 30, from Swadlincote, said her confidence had been knocked and she had felt unsure what to do before Groundwork Five Counties stepped in to help.

The charity, working with South Derbyshire Council, provided Zoe with a grant under its Beyond Barriers partnership.

It offers people between the ages of 18 and 64 support with their work goals – which could include setting up their own business, finding paid or voluntary work, getting into education or gaining new skills.

“I found Beyond Barriers through a community centre, where Claire (an employability coach with Groundwork) was speaking about the service and how it can help,” Zoe said.

She explained: “I was applying for jobs in animal care and was told to get a specific training package which would cost me thousands.

“I had already done the training, but the business wanted me to retake it and pay for it myself. I really wanted to work with animals, and I didn’t know how to get around this problem.”

Beyond Barriers paid for Zoe’s business insurance, business cards, leaflets, website and social media accounts.

“Over time, Claire gave me the confidence, knowledge, and even the funding to take the leap,” Zoe said.

“Claire has given me the confidence to do this, and navigate the admin that comes with setting up your own business, which can be pretty daunting.”
