Alderley Edge In Bloom has received funding for a new watering system which will make taking care of the village’s blooms easier during dry conditions such as those seen this summer.
Although it feels like the weather has taken care of much of the watering duties just recently, the group is delighted that it will make their task much easier next summer.
Volunteer Christine Munro applied for the funding from Manchester Airport, which granted Alderley Edge In Bloom approximately £1,400 to spend on the new watering equipment.
The watering of hanging baskets, troughs and planters throughout the village is one of the volunteers’ biggest responsibilities – particularly in the summer months.
The large planters in the village are funded by Alderley Edge Parish Council, who pay for their watering.
However, all other containers are watered by volunteers and businesses who have been particularly helpful and supportive during this year’s hot, dry spell.
Alderley Edge In Bloom chair Leslie Cox explained: “In the hot, dry summer we have had, watering has been a daily activity.
“With the acquisition of the new equipment volunteers will be able to water more efficiently and effectively but the significant benefit to the group will be the freeing up of time to devote to other projects to enhance the village environment.”
The group recently launched a crowdfunding campaign to help raise £2,000 for additional planters and litter picking equipment.
“Litter picking is another activity that takes up a lot of time,” added Leslie, “and any way in which litter picking can be more effective and efficient will have the benefit of freeing up time to devote to other improvements around the village.”
Leslie said: “We are also keen to get funding for more troughs to add to the eight on the Waitrose railings. We would also like to help businesses to buy troughs to put under their windows.
“Such troughs and hanging baskets make for a very attractive display as was seen this summer.”
