Members of Chester Sustainability Forum welcomed MP Aphra Brandreth MP to their January meeting for a discussion on the future of land use and biodiversity.

With an academic background in environmental economics and a decade of experience working for Defra, Ms Brandreth was able to speak about her commitment to promoting environmental issues both in Cheshire and in Parliament.

The sustainability forum, a non-political group open to all organisations with an interest in sustainability, hosted more than 35 attendees at the meeting – including representatives from environmental groups, local councillors and government agencies.

Their discussion focussed on the range of demands on land use – such as housing, food production, energy, and biodiversity.

Ms Brandreth – who has been appointed as a parliamentary private secretary within the shadow Defra team – talked about the importance of balancing these factors during the decision-making processes for major projects.

Among the other speakers at the meeting was Charlie Steer of Grosvenor Farms, who spoke about how they have increased biodiversity, reduced carbon emissions and improved soil carbon sequestration – all while maintaining food production.

He noted that farms of all sizes have the potential to enhance environmental sustainability whilst improving financial performance.

Simon Dowell, science director at Chester Zoo also provided an update on work to enhance biodiversity within the city and surrounding areas.

Mr Dowell reported on recent discussions with Defra minister Mary Creagh as well as plans for introducing a Deposit Return Scheme to reduce litter and waste.

Commenting after the meeting, Ms Brandreth said: “It was inspiring to see so many people engaged in discussions about biodiversity.

“The impressive turnout in the room demonstrates the depth of feeling and dedication to sustainability within our community.”

She added: “I would encourage anybody in Cheshire who cares about these issues to get involved with the forum and to share their ideas on working together to make our communities an even better place to live.”
