Weaver Vale MP Mike Amesbury was a guest at the Northwich Brain Tumour Support Group recently, where he discussed some of the challenges facing those with the condition.
During the latest meeting, the local MP spoke about his own family’s experiences with the illness and the impact it had on both him, his family and friends.
He also spoke with group members about their struggles for early or appropriate diagnoses, as well as problems with the benefit system – both when they were unable to work, and when they were looking to return to work following treatment.
Mike said: “Before this group was set up there was nothing for people in Northwich who had been newly diagnosed.
“Coming to terms with a serious illness can be an extremely worrying and also a lonely experience, and the importance of being surrounded by people who know what you’re going through and are able to share expertise and advice is absolutely crucial.”
The group was founded in 2013 by couple Steve and Eileen Sharman and has gone from strength-to-strength, with 18 members who attend regularly.
The group receives funding from a variety of local organisations as well as an annual donation from Weaver Lodge and donations from members of the group.
Steve Sharman explained: “The purpose of the group is there to help people who have been diagnosed with brain tumours, their carers and families.
“We also offer a large amount of support and information from the Brain Tumour charity.”
He added: “I’d like to thank Mr Amesbury MP for attending the meeting on Friday. It was very much appreciated by all who were present.”
The group meets every Monday throughout the year at the Northwich Carers Centre, 146 London Road, from 1pm to 3pm.
