Figures out earlier this week have revealed that more people are in work than ever before.
In the Tatton constituency, where the local MP is secretary of state for work and pensions Esther McVey, the number of people claiming out of work benefits has fallen by 637 since 2010 – a 58% per cent drop.
Employment has increased in the North West as a whole too – with 3,701,197 people currently in work. This is an increase of 296,946 since 2010.
Esther welcomed the new figures, which show that unemployment is at a 40 year low.
The local MP said: “Under the Conservatives a record number of people are now in work as unemployment continues to fall to record lows. And with wages rising faster than prices, pay packets can go further.
“That means more people have the security of a job and are able to provide for their families.”
She added: “We will continue to take the balanced approach our economy needs to support businesses to create better, higher paying jobs, ensuring our future security and prosperity.”
Nationally, employment stood at 32.39 million people in work (up by 440,000 over the last year and up more than 3.3 million since 2010).
The number of people working full time is also at a record high, and there are over 1.2 million more women in work now compared to 2010.
The national employment rate now stands at 75.6% (up 0.8 points over the past year and up 5.4 points since 2010) which is the highest since comparable records began in 1971.
Average weekly earnings rose by 2.8% compared with figures fro last year.
Wages are now rising faster than prices: in the last year, regular pay for employees in Great Britain increased by 0.4 percentage points ahead of inflation.
Finally, the figures showed that there are 419,000 fewer young people out of work when compared with 2010 – this is a 44.6% improvement.
