Update on progress at Crewe’s Royal Arcade development

The foundations are being laid for a new bus station and multi-storey car park in Crewe town centre.

Now that the town’s former bus station has been demolished, construction equipment has arrived at the Royal Arcade site to set about building the foundations of the scheme.

Works on new structural frames are due to start towards the end of April, with the project on track to open as planned at the end of this year.

Cllr Nick Mannion, chair of Cheshire East Council’s economy and growth committee, said: “To have this plant on site and to have got to this point in the first phase of our Royal Arcade scheme is fantastic news.

“It has been great to see first-hand the progress that has been made to deliver these two new facilities.

“They are an important part of the town’s ongoing regeneration and are key to us being able to move ahead with several other schemes that will benefit the town, its communities and the wider borough.”

Cllr Mannion added: “I would like to reiterate my thanks to the public and local businesses for their patience while work on this project is carried out.

“We continue to work closely with our contractors and colleagues to ensure that information is available on site and that staff are available should people need support while the temporary bus arrangements are in place.”

The multi-storey car park will provide a modern, safer, and better-quality facility for people visiting Crewe.

The council says it will provide the capacity needed to allow it to free-up some of the older surface car parks in the town.

This will enable the council to move forward with other development projects to help improve the town centre which is hopes will attract more people and investment.

The car park will have 388 spaces – including 24 accessible spaces and an initial 20 spaces with electric vehicle charging facilities.

While construction is taking place, eight temporary bus stands will remain in use alongside temporary passenger shelters, cycle stands and welfare facilities for bus operators.
