Teens’ Xmas presents – VW Polo and Audi A1 road tested

Promotional feature

Christmas is coming and if you want to give your teen the ultimate pressie then you may well be looking at popping a bow on top of a car.

When you’re buying a car as a gift for a young driver, there are some important points you need to take into consideration before wrapping the keys and popping them under your Christmas tree:

1) Safety – the first time your teen drives solo, your heart will be in your mouth; knowing the car they’re driving is Euro NCAP 5 star rated will help ease your nerves… just a little!

2) Insurance – teen insurance is extraordinarily expensive, but keeping the engine size down to 1 litre helps as does checking the insurance grouping of the car you choose.

3) New vs used – you might think that insurance would be less expensive on a cheaper car, but this is not necessarily the case. Buying a much older car can cost more to insure than buying a car that’s new or less than 3 years old.

Road test: Volkswagen Polo

Ticks the teen boxes with its 5 star Euro NCAP rating and insurance group 1 for some of the 1 litre engine models.

This latest iteration of Volkswagen’s Polo has won plaudits across the board, including winning 2018 World Urban Car of the Year at the World Car Awards.

So, it was interesting to see what motoring journalist John Swift, a Ford Fiesta lover, thought when he got behind the wheel of the latest VW Polo.

Road test: Audi A1

This supermini ticks all the teen boxes and then some, with added ‘it’ factor! This former What Car? Car of the Year comes with a 5 star Euro NCAP rating and a 1 litre engine, which leads to insurance starting from group 9.

Motoring journalist John Swift got behind the wheel of the Audi A1 to find out why, eight years on from its launch, the Audi A1 remain class-leading in its sector.
