A woman from Leicestershire has been named East Midlands Railway’s apprentice of the year for 2025.
Alys Lee, from Loughborough – who is a manager in the firm’s control team based in Derby – was presented with the prize as part of National Apprenticeship Week (10th-16th February).
Her job involves the strategic handling of incidents and disruption, helping to keep staff and customers moving.
Alongside her current role, she has taken part in a management apprenticeship which places an emphasis on women in leadership.
It aims to inspire, motivate and empower current female leaders and those of the future.
Ms Lee was nominated for the apprenticeship award by her colleagues, who praised her dedication to making positive changes and passion for supporting her team.
Reflecting on her decision to enrol on the apprenticeship, she said: “I was keen to develop my skills through a formal qualification.
“The apprenticeship provided the perfect opportunity, offering the flexibility to manage my learning alongside my shifts.”
Her journey into the rail industry began when she took on a customer service role with Virgin Trains.
Following a brief time working as cabin crew for British Airways, she returned to the railways and has since held various positions across the industry, gaining a wealth of experience.
Ms Lee said: “I’m really grateful to be recognised for my hard work. It means a lot that my colleagues see the impact I’m making.”
She added: “The railway industry is full of opportunities and an apprenticeship is a fantastic way to develop skills while working.
“The women in leadership programme has been invaluable in connecting me with other women who share similar experiences and challenges.”
