Bosses at Cheshire West and Chester Council say they are committed to providing a new modern market at Northwich’s shopping and leisure destination, Barons Quay.
It would be the biggest investment in Northwich Market since the 1960s, the authority claimed, adding that the new market would receive about £1.8m of funding.
The project will include bespoke fixtures and facilities to provide an improved experience for customers and traders whilst also complementing the existing retail, leisure and hospitality venues operating at Barons Quay.
“It has been proven elsewhere that a new modern market with traditional stalls alongside a new food and beverage offer plus al fresco space, is one of the most effective ways to increase footfall and regenerate a town centre,” a spokesperson said.
“The council is working with existing traders to offer space for them in the new market to provide continuity and bring in new traders to ensure the market can expand and thrive in its new location.”
They added: “Markets provide an ideal opportunity to nurture entrepreneurs and test out new business ideas with low set-up costs and plenty of friendly support and mentoring available from market staff and other traders to help anyone take their first steps into trading.”
Units 12 and 13 of Barons Quay are currently vacant and would provide an ideal location for the new market, according to the council.
The current Northwich Market is set to be relocated as part of plans to demolish Weaver Square and build more than 100 new homes in the town centre.
The new market in Northwich was currently expected to open in 2026, and the existing market would remain open for business until the new market opened.
