After a delayed reopening, the tills are finally beginning to ring again for traders in Leek’s indoor markets.
Some traders were welcoming customers back on Wednesday (27th November) while others will be returning on Friday and Saturday (29th and 30th November).
The revamped indoor markets have had a £3.4m transformation, and there’s more in store – as two new food and drink businesses will be rolling back the shutters on Friday 6th December.
Councillor Matt Swindlehurst, cabinet member for leisure and tourism at Staffordshire Moorlands District Council said he was thrilled to see Scrumbles and Slamwich take up units inside the Trestle Market.
“The new food and drink units are such an important part of this regeneration so it’s fantastic to be joined by these local businesses as we start a new era for the markets,” he said.
The Slamwich Club will be providing their award-winning range of toasted sandwiches, fries and sides. Their other store is on Piccadilly in Hanley and is a firm favourite with the So Staffordshire team.
Scrumbles Cake Shop is returning to Leek with coffee, desserts and sweet treats. Their previous store was on St Edward Street, and they also have a store in Brown Edge – safe to say it’s a So Staffordshire favourite too.
The existing market cafe has also reopened, continuing in its usual place within the Butter Market.
There is now one remaining food and drink unit available in the Trestle Market, and two vacant stalls in the Butter Market – with applications now open for these stalls.
The council says the refurbishment has future-proofed the markets halls – delivering modern, flexible spaces for and an improved customer experience.
There will also be a series of themed Fridays markets – with the first Friday each the month themed around fashion; the second focussed on food and drink; the third on makers and artists; and vintage at the end of each month.
An official reopening event will take place in the new year.
