A Cheshire MP is due to meet with rail bosses in a bid to push for repairs to be carried out at a station where a wall and part of a roof collapsed.
Andrew Cooper, who represents the Mid Cheshire constituency, has arranged the meeting to take place at Northwich Station with representatives from the Office of Rail and Road as well as Network Rail and train operator Northern.
Their discussions, due to take place on Friday 1st November, will centre around arrangements for repair work after a gable wall and part of a roof canopy at the station came crashing down in 2021.
Two passengers were left shaken after the incident – which saw a combination of brick, glass and metalwork fall onto the platform outside the ticket office.
According to an Office of Rail and Road report, published earlier this year, the cause of the collapse was overgrown vegetation which had not been properly kept under control.
The government department, which is responsible for the regulation of safety on Britain’s railways, has since decided it would not to bring any prosecutions in relation to the incident.
Three-and-a-half years on, the ticket office has still not been reopened, and an interior fit-out is currently not scheduled to begin until September 2025.
Mr Cooper said one of his aims for the meeting was to persuade Network Rail to bring forward their start date for the work.
“Travellers to and from Northwich have waited too long for this rebuild to be completed,” he said.
He added: “One of my key priorities is to see Northwich Station rebuilt and the ticket office is reopened as soon as possible, so it is important I have a good working relationship with Network Rail and Northern to ensure that this happens.”
He said there were a number of other issues at the station, including accessibility, that he also wanted to discuss during the meeting.
