A Cheshire MP has been ordered to appear in court to face a charge of assault, according to police.
Mike Amesbury, MP for Runcorn and Helsby, is due to attend Chester Magistrates Court on Monday 30th December.
Cheshire Police said the charge related to the assault of a 45-year-old man on Main Street in Frodsham, which was reported shortly before 3am on Saturday 26th October.
Mr Amesbury was suspended from the Labour Party after details of the alleged incident emerged online.
He posted on Facebook on Thursday confirming that he had been summonsed to court to face a charge of common assault.
In the post, the 55-year-old described said the alleged incident was “deeply regrettable” and added that he was continuing to cooperate with police.
“Given this is an ongoing case I cannot comment further,” he said.
Mr Amesbury has been a Labour MP in Cheshire since 2017 and held a number of shadow ministerial roles between July 2018 and May 2024.
At the general election in July he won his constituency with a majority of 14,696 and a 52.9% vote share.
