A Cheshire MP has said he was involved in an incident following a situation in which he claimed to have “felt threatened”.
Mike Amesbury, who represents Runcorn and Helsby, said he was out with friends shortly before the incident happened and has subsequently been in touch with police about the matter.
He said he would cooperate fully with any inquiries if required to do so by police.
In a video shared on social media, seen by So Cheshire, the MP appears to be remonstrating with a man who is lying on the ground.
Mr Amesbury can be heard to say “you won’t ever threaten me again,” and gesticulating towards the man.
At one point a woman appears to push Mr Amesbury away from the man, who is surrounded by a small group of people who seem to have come to his aid.
Onlookers are heard identifying Mr Amesbury as the local MP, which he can be heard confirming as he approaches the man again.
It is unclear from the recording what happened prior to the footage that has been shared.
It is understood the incident took place on Main Street in Frodsham in the early hours of Saturday morning.
In a statement posted on his social media pages, Mr Amesbury said: “Last night, I was involved in an incident that took place after I felt threatened on the street following an evening out with friends.
“This morning, I contacted Cheshire Police myself to report what happened during this incident.
“I will not be making further public comment but will, of course, cooperate with any inquiries if required by Cheshire Police.
“I remain fully committed to working hard for the people of Runcorn and Helsby, and am determined to remain an open and accessible MP for our community.”
In 2023, a man was found guilty of stalking and harassing Mr Amesbury at his constituency office and in Frodsham.
Cheshire Police has been contacted for a statement about the incident which took place this weekend.
