The boss of a charity in Cheshire that supports people with autism says it only has months left to sort out its finances, or it could fold.
“It’s devastating to consider that our doors may soon close on those who rely on us every day,” said Jill Schofield, chief officer at Macclesfield-based Speaking Up Speaking Out (SUSO).
“This would not only impact individuals and the community we serve, but also place additional strain on other organisations and health services in our area,” she added.
The charity works with adults who have learning disabilities and autism.
Ms Schofield said rising operational costs, increased demand for the charity’s services and a decline in funding had left SUSO needing immediate support to continue its work.
She explained their utility bills and operational costs had increased significantly, while funding from individuals and corporate donations had fallen.
Meanwhile, she said there more and more families were turning to SUSO for help.
Ms Schofield said they only had until March to stabilise the charity’s financial situation to ensure SUSO can continue providing its services.
Founded in 2005, SUSO aims to reduce isolation, increase skills and confidence, create new opportunities, improve health and wellbeing as well as awareness of the abilities and needs of people with learning disabilities and autism.
