Work on the redevelopment of a leisure centre in Staffordshire is continuing at pace, according to the local authority.
Staffordshire Moorlands District Council said the demolition phase at Brough Park Leisure Centre in Leek was now complete and the foundations were being laid for the new structure.
The £17 million project to expand and fully modernise the facilities is set to provide a new health and wellbeing centre for the town, due to reopen in early 2026.
Cllr Matt Swindlehurst, cabinet member for leisure and tourism, said: “A lot of progress has been made since the work started at the end of last year and things are already looking very different at the site.
“It’s great to see the foundations being laid for the new structure – it really helps to show the scale of the project we’re delivering here to provide a state-of-the-art facility for our residents and visitors now and for generations to come.”
When the centre re-opens, it will feature:
- A new six-lane, 25m main pool with accessible access points
- A new learner pool for lessons, classes and casual use
- A 60-station fitness gym, almost double the size of the previous gym
- A new 25-bike group cycling studio
- A new changing area to serve the swimming pool areas
- A fully-inclusive changing places facility, supporting people with additional needs or disabilities
- An improved cafe and reception area
- A new community wellness suite to support people who are new to exercise, recovering from illness and injury or being referred by their GP
- A new soft play zone
Funding for the project includes £10.8m from the government as well as £3m from the council, plus £1.8m from Sport England and more than £1.1m from Salix for decarbonisation measures.
MyActive, the council’s new health and wellbeing company, manages the authority’s leisure centres in the Moorlands.
