Tamworth Castle will join other prominent landmarks around the country by turning purple for Holocaust Memorial Day on 27th January.
This year marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the largest Nazi death camp, Auschwitz-Birkenau, as well as the 30th anniversary of the genocide in Bosnia.
Holocaust Memorial Day remembers all aspects of the Holocaust and Nazi persecution as well as subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.
Tamworth Borough Council will light the castle purple from 4pm, in remembrance of those who were killed and in honour of survivors.
The illuminated landmarks will join together to acknowledge the victims of the Holocaust and other genocides and to take a stand against prejudice, discrimination and hatred.
The theme for Holocaust Memorial Day 2025 is “For a Better Future”.
Council leader Carol Dean said: “The Holocaust threatened the fabric of civilisation, and genocide must still be resisted every day.
“Our world often feels fragile and vulnerable, and we cannot be complacent. Even in the UK, prejudice and the language of hatred must be challenged by us all.”
She added: “I feel it is important to support the Holocaust Memorial Day and as a town encourage the 80th anniversary remembrance of six million Jews murdered during that time.
“Together we bear witness for those who endured genocide and honour the survivors and all those whose lives were changed beyond recognition.”
The Royal British Legion will be holding a Holocaust memorial ceremony outside St Editha’s Church in Tamworth at 11am on 27th January.
People are also invited to join in the remembrance at home, by placing a lit candle in their window to help spread messages of tolerance and understanding.
