First ever CWAC Green councillor to stand in Chester by-election

The Green Party has announced Helsby councillor Paul Bowers as their candidate in the upcoming Chester parliamentary by-election.

The by-election was called due to the resignation of disgraced Labour MP Chris Matheson, who was found guilty of sexual misconduct.

A spokesperson for the party said: “We are proud and excited to announce that Cllr Paul Bowers has been selected as the Chester by-election candidate for the Green Party.

“Paul is a local family man, Cheshire West and Chester councillor and veteran environmental campaigner.

“As a painter and decorator by trade, he fully understands first hand, the effects that the current cost of living crisis is having on working families across the city.”

Cllr Bowers grew up and was educated in Chester and now lives in Tarvin with his family.

He has been an active campaigner in the local area for more than a decade, and has campaigned on issues including fracking, air quality and the Hynet Blue Hydrogen programme.

His party said he is a positive voice of reason in Cheshire West and Chester Council meetings, and that he is guided by the community rather than party whips.

In 2019 he was elected as the first ever Green councillor in Cheshire – with 54.78% of the vote share.

Since then, along with supporting his ward, he has used this new platform to stand up for active travel in Chester and has served as deputy chair of the CWAC’s Climate Taskforce.

Paul commented: “Having lived in Chester most of my life, it has become clear that we need a braver, fairer and cleaner vision for our city.”

He has pledged to fight for the environment, jobs and families, and for the city of Chester.
