Runcorn and Helsby MP Mike Amesbury has been suspended from the Labour Party, it has been reported.
It follows an incident in the early hours of Saturday morning in Frodsham town centre, in which Mr Amesbury claimed to have “felt threatened”.
Footage of the incident, filmed by an onlooker and shared on social media, appears to show the MP remonstrating with a man who is lying on the ground.
CCTV footage has subsequently been obtained by the Daily Mail which apparently shows a man on the ground being hit several times.
Cheshire Police provided an update on Sunday evening, in which they said a 55-year-old man was voluntarily interviewed under caution in relation to the incident on Main Street in Frodsham, which was reported to them at 2.48am on Saturday 26th October.
They said he had later been released pending further enquiries.
In a statement posted on his social media pages on Saturday, Mr Amesbury said he would not be making further public comment about the matter but added he would cooperate with any inquiries if required by Cheshire Police.
He said: “I remain fully committed to working hard for the people of Runcorn and Helsby, and am determined to remain an open and accessible MP for our community.”
In 2023, a man was found guilty of stalking and harassing Mr Amesbury at his constituency office and in Frodsham.
Mr Amesbury has been a Labour MP in Cheshire since 2017 and he was a shadow minister between 2018 and May 2024.
At the general election in July he won his constituency with a majority of 14,696 and a vote share of 52.9% while Jason Moorcroft of Reform UK polled second and Conservative candidate Jade Marsden came in third.
