Elizabeth Wardlaw has been selected as the Conservative candidate in the upcoming Chester by-election.
The ballot was announced following the resignation of the city’s disgraced former MP Chris Matheson who stood down from the role after being found guilty of sexual misconduct.
The Tories selected Ms Wardlaw, who is from Congleton, earlier today (Saturday 29th October).
She is a nurse, and has represented the Odd Rode ward on Cheshire East Council since 2015.
She believes these two roles stand her in good stead for the parliamentary job.
Wardlaw said: “Chester is such an iconic city and if elected as the Conservative MP I will fight for the issues that matter to local people, ensuring their voices are heard in parliament.”
She also feels she is well-placed to work with the government to ensure the city doesn’t miss out on funding opportunities as part of the government’s levelling up agenda.
She said: “Across Cheshire I know that such things as housing, employment, education, renewable energy, food security and the rural economy are all things that matter to people, but I also want to hear what other issues residents have here in Chester.
“I’m under no illusions, there are difficult times ahead for everyone, but it’s more important now than ever to get on with delivering our manifesto.
“We need to invigorate the city of Chester and energise our local economy which I believe only the Conservatives can do.”
Labour are also expected to announce their candidate this weekend, and the Greens have confirmed they will be announcing their candidate on Friday (4th November).
The Lib Dems announced their parliamentary candidate back in September.
Meanwhile, The Official Monster Raving Loony Party have shared a post on Facebook suggesting tv presenter Patrick Christys will be standing as their candidate.
They said: “GB News’s Patrick Christys, after joining the Official Monster Raving Loony Party during his last interview with Nick the Flying Brick a couple of weeks ago has agreed to stand as our candidate for the City of Chester live on tv.
“Well done Patrick. You know it makes sense.”
Mr Christys has not confirmed if he is standing, but has been approached for comment.
