With Halloween behind us, and large-scale Bonfire Night festivities now forbidden, our focus turns to preparing for Christmas celebrations and our emergence from a second national lockdown.
However, because this is 2020, things are not going to happen as usual.
We’ve outlined some of the changes we know about so far, and will update this article once we know more.
As with everything this year, the following information carries with it the inevitable caveat that this could – and likely will – change with very little warning.

Alderley Edge
The Christmas lights switch on event will take a different form from that of previous years.
The spectacle has been organised by Mitch Gilbert and AETAG for the past 17 years.
Organisers this year were hoping to put together a celebration that had the potential to go ahead, even whilst adhering to restrictions, however new measures mean plans have had to been moderated.
Three Christmas trees will be installed in the village, along with column lights (and existing tree lights) along London Road.
The lights are scheduled to be switched on – without a ceremony – on Saturday 21st November.

Knutsford
This year’s list of festive events has been radically streamlined.
As government guidelines have changed, we’re awaiting further confirmation of the event schedule.
As it stands, the following events have been cancelled:
- Christmas Light Switch On (see below)
- Crib Parade
- Santa Parade
- Santa’s Grotto
The usual Christmas lights will be quietly switched on, however, will be no official ‘switch on’ this year. The quiet switch on is scheduled for Saturday 28th November.

Northwich
The popular Christmas Extravaganza event will not be taking place this year.
Despite this, Northwich BID is confident that there will be plenty of festive cheer around the town thanks to a number of installations and initiatives.
There will be four sparkling Christmas trees located by the Library, by Town Bridge, in Weaver Square and in Barons Square.
Festive lights and solar-powered Christmas tree hanging baskets will adorn the streets.
A virtual light switch-on video (featuring a countdown from a range of businesses) will be released online to kick off the festivities.
Shops and retailers are also being invited to take part in a window display competition which shoppers can check out when they’re able to visit the high street in December.
Northwich BID will be promoting a shop local message to persuade people to support the town’s businesses in the run up to Christmas.
