Campaigners call for new recycling centre in Congleton

Campaigners say they have around 6,000 signatures backing their calls for a new tip in Congleton.

They have launched a series of petitions, aimed at getting a recycling centre for the town after Cheshire East Council closed the old site in September 2021.

The authority’s lease of that site came to an end, and council bosses decided not to provide a replacement facility in Congleton.

Currently, the nearest alternatives are in Alsager and Macclesfield.

A new contract to run the borough’s seven recycling sites begins in April, which will see them managed by the council’s wholly-owned environmental services company Ansa.

The contract will run for a minimum of five years, and will also see two ‘re-use shops’ created in Macclesfield and Crewe.

The re-use shops will enable items – such as tables and chairs – that are disposed of at the sites but still in a good condition to be displayed and sold on to other people.

The new contract also includes plans for a mobile household waste service to travel to rural areas and places where there is low car usage.

It is hoped this service could be introduced by early next year, dependent on the costs involved.

This weekend, protestors held a demonstration outside the former Congleton recycling site – with signs saying “new tip not fly tip” and “Congleton, we need a new tip”.

The group say Cheshire East Council has agreed to consider their three petitions, which they will hand over to the Environment and Communities Committee on Thursday 2nd February 2023.

Congleton town councillor Robert Douglas is one of the campaign’s organisers.

He said: “Congleton town councillors representing the whole political spectrum and our residents are united in the belief that Congleton must have its own recycling site.

“In May 2021, Cheshire East Council made the decision not to replace our recycling site but our campaigning forced Cheshire East to re-consider that decision.

“They formed a sub-committee to investigate future household waste and recycling site provision, with particular reference to Congleton and surrounding areas.

“Handing in these petitions adds impetus to our campaign by demonstrating the strength of feeling in our local area on this issue.

“It is ridiculous for Congleton and the surrounding parishes with a population of around 35,000 and growing, not to be provided with such a facility.”

Protestors gathered at the demonstration included town mayor Cllr Margaret Gartside (Lib Dem), Cllr Kay Wesley (Women’s Equality Party), Cllr Suzy Firkin (Lib Dem), Cllr Robert Douglas (Lib Dem), Cllr Paul Duffy (Lib Dem), Cllr Rob Hensley (Lib Dem) as well as Jackie Kay of Congleton Climate Action Group and local resident Lesley Turner.
