Following the government’s announcement last night (Monday 23rd March) both Cheshire councils have now closed their play areas.
Cheshire West and Chester Council leader, Cllr Louise Gittins said: “Following government guidelines issued last night, we have closed all council-owned play areas from today [Tuesday 24th March] until further notice.
“Our parks and open spaces remain open for exercise once a day as advised, but visitors should follow social distancing advice and stay at least 2m (6ft) away from other people.
“The government has also stopped public gatherings of more than two people, except for members from the same household.
“The police have powers to enforce this, including fines and dispersing gatherings of more than two people.
“I hope our parks and open spaces will be used appropriately to provide much-needed fresh air for many people, as we all take the necessary action to help beat the coronavirus.”
A statement from Cheshire East Council read: “Following the latest announcement from the prime minister (23rd March) to close all play areas, outdoor gyms and skate parks, all such areas in Cheshire East Council-owned parks will close from today (24th March).
“The parks and green open spaces will remain open for daily exercise but the council urges residents to stick to the latest government instructions. Social distancing guidelines must be followed.
“These open areas can be used once daily by people on their own or with members of their household for a run, walk or a cycle. Groups of more than two people will be dispersed. People should keep at least two metres apart at all times.
“Where we are unable to guarantee the safety of visitors, due to people not observing the strict social distancing requirements and play area equipment closures, we will have no other option but to report to the police, and ultimately close entire park sites.”
