Three special trees planted in Castle Park

Three trees are set to be dedicated to three important individuals at a historic park in Frodsham in the coming month.

Cheshire West and Chester Council (CWAC) and Castle Park Trust have arranged for the trees to be planted in Castle Park, ahead of a formal dedication event in February.

The trees have been planted in the top field at the park in honour of His Majesty King Charles III, the late Queen Elizabeth II and the late Cllr Marie Birkenhead.

Cllr Birkenhead was a former councillor of Vale Royal Borough Council and an honorary alderman who championed Frodsham and its residents throughout her life.

The tress that have been planted are:

– for Cllr Birkenhead, a Cherry (prunus avium plena)

– for the late Queen, a small-leaved lime (tilia cordata greenspire)

– for King Charles, a Lobel Elm (ulmus lobel).

CWAC leader, Cllr Louise Gittins said: “These lovely trees will be a fitting tribute to the importance and significance of our late Queen, His Majesty the King and Marie Birkenhead.

“The trees will also add to the distinctive array of trees at Castle Park, which has a remarkable ‘tree trail’ with numerous rare and beautiful species.”

Castle Park comprises a historic manor house and nine hectares of Green Flag awarded grounds.

The parkland includes a formal gardens, open lawns, wooded areas and recreational facilities.

The house is situated on the site of Frodsham Castle, which burnt down in 1654, and was built in the late 18th century by lawyer Robert Wainwright Ashley.

It was presented to Runcorn Rural District Council in the 1930s under a ‘deed of gift’ for the use, enjoyment and benefit of the inhabitants of Frodsham.

In 2006 the house was fully restored and adapted to provide commercial office space and conference facilities.

In 2010 the park and grounds were revitalised using a combination of Heritage Lottery and council funding.

The wider park area now boasts landscaped gardens and a formal garden as well as a bowling green, tennis courts, a children’s playground and multi-use games area.

Having been transferred to Vale Royal Borough Council as part of local government reorganisation in 1974, it was passed to Cheshire West and Chester Council in 2009 under the most recent round of local government reorganisation.
