Countdown to Goosfest 2018

Shares

Goosfest is a ‘not for profit’ arts and music festival held each year in October at various venues in and round the village of Goostrey, near Holmes Chapel.

The festival offers a diverse programme of events including classical, folk or contemporary music, theatre, stand-up comedy and craft workshops.

There are over 25 events this year, including the following:

Barry Cryer and Colin Sell – Strictly Come Joking

(Saturday 6th October 2018)

‘Strictly Come Joking’ promises to be a sell-out night of entertainment, remembered for years to come.

Barry Cryer is one of the best-loved, funniest people in show business and both he and Colin Sell, the composer and musician, are well-known for their contributions to long running radio shows such as ‘I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue’.

Colin has previously accompanied Barry with the late Willie Rushton in their stage show ‘Two Old Farts in the Night’.

Barry’s pedigree is as long as it is illustrious; starting from the Windmill Theatre London where he worked alongside many legendary comedians, to his career as one of the top comedy writers working with David Frost for a show that  won the Golden Rose at that year’s Montreux Festival.

Other credits to his name have included the Two Ronnies and Morecombe and Wise.

As a performer, Barry moved into TV and radio and has appeared in many of the best-known panel games on British TV.

He has become one of the country’s most popular after-dinner speakers and has spoken before the Prince of Wales, entertained Princess Anne and also shared speaking duties with the Duke of Edinburgh.

The Christians In Concert

(Saturday 13th October 2018)

The Christians are a band from Liverpool whose musical ability, infectious melodies and warm harmonies have endeared a large following since their origins in the 80s.

Their creative output has led to countless UK and international chart hits.

They continue to tour extensively in the UK and across mainland Europe to rave reviews – Chris Evans recently described their set as being: “The best gig I have ever been to.”

Their double-platinum debut album came out in 1987 and since then their output of albums has been both regular and always well received by both critics and public alike.

Even for those who have not followed the Christians, it is almost certain that you will recognise many of their songs when you hear them.

Their gig promises to be a high energy and wonderful night of entertainment in front of a sell-out audience – make sure you buy your tickets early for this night.

Lost in Papua New Guinea – Lecture by Benedict Allen

(Sunday 21st October 2018)

In partnership with the Royal Geographic Society Goosfest will be concluding its top-billed events with a lecture by Benedict Allen.

Benedict Allen is one of the world’s leading explorers, famous for his technique of not taking a GPS, phone or normal ‘backup’, but instead relying on skills he has learnt from indigenous people.

He has published ten books – two of them best sellers – and made seven tv series for the BBC.

With his usual enthusiasm and humour, Benedict will share the true story of his recent expedition to the remotest forests of Papua and New Guinea.

This was a daring journey to locate people who befriended him 35 years ago, and which created headlines around the world when he became  gravely ill and was ‘rescued’ by a tabloid newspaper.
