Details of a little-known iPhone feature enabling rapid access to emergency help has been circulating on social media recently and we decided to check if it was genuine – and the good news is that it is.
Here’s how it works
Pressing the lock button on your iPhone five times in quick succession will activate a countdown from 3 to 1 along with a warning sound.
You can also access the Emergency SOS function if you press and hold the lock button whilst simultaneously pressing and holding either of the two volume buttons.
Once the countdown is complete, your iPhone will then automatically call the emergency services.
Once the call has ended you can then also choose to send a message your iPhone has automatically prepared for you to your emergency contact to let them know your location and that you’ve called the emergency services.
For a limited amount of time, it will also update your emergency contact on your situation – for instance, if your location changes.
For those who have location settings disabled (for example, for privacy reasons or battery saving) your iPhone will temporarily switch these on.
How do I enable this feature?
Simply type ‘Emergency SOS’ in the search bar to open that page within your settings menu.
What about privacy?
