Everyone has dreamt of winning the lottery before, but is there really a way to increase your chances of hitting the jackpot?
Forget about crystal balls and hocus-pocus, there are in fact some logical ways to increase your odds of winning the lottery, although nothing is ever guaranteed.
Which lottery to bet on?
First off is to see which lotteries have the best odds. Whilst this may seem obvious, it often doesn’t cross people’s minds to play anything other than the lotteries available to them at their local corner shop.
Many lottery players are unaware that online lottery betting enables them to participate in lotteries from around the world which offer better odds than the UK National Lottery and the EuroMillions, such as the Irish Lottery which has great jackpots odds of 1 in 10,737,573 as opposed to the National Lottery odds of 1 in 45,057,474.
The chances of winning any prize on the Irish Lottery are only 1 in 29.
You are 4x more likely to win the Irish Lotto than the UK National Lottery as you only need to match 6 numbers from 47 rather than from 59.
Some of the other lotteries worth have a go on are Mini Lotto from Poland at 1 in 850,668, Austrian Lotto at 1 in 8,145,060 and Polish Lotto at 1 in 13,983,816.
Another way to improve your chances is to join a syndicate. A syndicate is a group of individuals who pool their money and buy multiple tickets to play the lottery together and thus increase their chances of winning.
Some of the biggest jackpot wins in the world have been won by syndicates such as the $1.05 billion US Mega Millions jackpot won by the four members of the Wolverine FLL Club from Michigan and the 16 quarrymen from the Dan Morrisey Company in Bennekerry, Ireland who won €19 million on the Irish Lotto.
It is estimated that 20% of all lottery jackpots are won by syndicates, impressively, 1 in 5 lotto jackpots won across the world are won by syndicates. Online lotto betting sites such as Lottoland also offer the chances to participate with a syndicate option.
This is the million-dollar question. Even though every number has the same chance of winning, some numbers do appear more often than others.
When considering which numbers to pick for the lotto, one method is to analyse which numbers are the most frequent (or ‘hot’) and which are the most overdue (‘cold’). The most common National Lottery numbers are currently 52, 8, 36, 54, 58 and 27.
The most overdue are 24, 48, 21, 15, 13 and 30.
However, according to renowned mathematician and lottery expert Skip Garibaldi, who has published numerous papers on the mathematics of the lottery, ‘any choice of numbers is equally likely to win the jackpot’ and ‘seventy percent of winners are quick picks’.
Some sound advice by Garibaldi is to avoid dates as you will be more likely to share the winnings with other people who have chosen the same numbers and you are also limiting yourself to numbers below 31; ‘a lot of people play dates, and numbers between 1 and 12 are especially popular so you might avoid those.’
One of the special features on online lotto betting is being able to take advantage of system betting. System betting increases your chances of winning a lottery by allowing you to choose extra numbers in addition to the standard amount of numbers required to hit the jackpot Normally you choose a standard set of numbers for the lottery you are betting on; so for example you choose 6 numbers for the Irish Lotto.
For example, by picking 7 numbers for the Irish Lotto instead of 6 you will bet on 7 different combinations of 6 of those numbers to increase your chance to win.
Essentially, this means that you are choosing more than the standard set of numbers than you would on a regular game. These numbers are bet on the draw in multiple combinations, affording you the opportunity to match more numbers per bet.
With a system ticket you can play more numbers per bet slip and therefore statistically increase your chances of winning.
All the possible number combinations are automatically selected for you from your chosen digits.
This has the added advantage of paying out more in the case of a win, since you would win with many number combinations at the same time.
Play more often
Ultimately, as the saying goes, you need to be in it to win it. The more shares you buy and the more lotteries you play, your chances increase, but the odds remain slim.
In order not to forget to play, it is worth subscribing to a lotto. Imagine forgetting to put your numbers down or not being able to make it to the shop only for your numbers to come up that draw!
Of course, it is important to act sensibly and not put yourself in a position of financial difficulty by spending too much money on the lottery.
Alternatively, rather than play the same lottery every week, why not mix things up and bet on different lottos from around the world as a way to increase your chances and break the monotony?
Unfortunately, there is no magic formula or trick to winning the lottery, no matter what method you try, ultimately, it is a game of chance.
However, by choosing a lottery with decent odds, joining a syndicate, taking advantage of system betting and playing more frequently, you may be able to increase your chances.
The rest is down to Lady Luck.
