Home Secretary Priti Patel visits Bedfordshire

Home Secretary Priti Patel was in Bedford this week to support the county’s Conservative police and crime commissioner candidate Festus Akinbusoye.

The home secretary visited Bedford Academy, and heard about the remarkable turnaround achieved by the school, which has cut exclusion rates by 80% over the past three years.

Mr Akinbusoye said: “It was a pleasure to invite Home Secretary Priti Patel to meet staff and pupils at the Bedford Academy.”

He added: “There is evidence which shows excluded pupils being prime targets for county line gangs and other forms of criminal or sexual exploitation.

“I commend the staff and management team at Bedford Academy for their fantastic work in helping to keep more of our young people in education.”

If elected as Bedfordshire’s next police and crime commissioner, Mr Akinbusoye says he will commit to supporting schools and young people.

Following the visit to Bedford Academy, the home secretary visited Scald End Farm to meet with local residents and farmers.

The Conservative candidate said that tackling rural crime is another key campaign commitment of his, and highlighted that such issues rarely exist in isolation from other crimes.

He also took the opportunity to raise his concerns about the impact of the current funding formula on the capacity of Bedfordshire Police to effectively tackle serious organised crime.

He said: “The home secretary assured me the government was reviewing this issue and praised the force for its work cutting overall crime by four percent and serious violence by nearly ten percent.”
