Barclays to close in Alderley Edge

Barclays has confirmed it will close its branch in Alderley Edge.

Barclays was the last remaining bank in Alderley Edge after NatWest, RBS and HSBC all exited, and it leaves the village with just one cash machine.

A Barclays spokesperson said: “The decision to close a branch is never an easy one.

“However, customers are increasingly using alternatives to branches to do their banking and, as a result, we are seeing a sustained fall in branch visits across the UK.

“This is reflected at our Alderley Edge branch, where we’ve seen a 30 per cent reduction in counter transactions in the last 12 months, when compared to March 2020.

“90 per cent of customers who visit the branch are also using different ways to bank and only nine customers use the branch exclusively for their banking.

“We will work with our customers and provide alternative options to ensure they can continue to manage their money and receive financial expertise when required.

“This includes working with the local community to find different, more flexible ways for our colleagues to continue to provide local banking support, such as through pop-up presences.”

The branch will close on Wednesday 5th October.

The news has been greeted with disappointment by local officials.

Alderley Edge ward councillor Craig Browne commented: “The decision by Barclays to close their branch in Alderley Edge is disappointing, as this was the last remaining bank in the village and (in addition to Post Office counter services) leaves us with just one remaining ATM facility, at Tesco.

“Over the last few years, we have lost face-to-face banking facilities firstly at HSBC, then NatWest, most recently RBS and now Barclays.

“Whilst the change to online banking by many customers is undeniable (probably further accelerated by the pandemic), these decisions fail to take account of the fact that there are still a number of people locally, especially elderly people who are not online and are unfamiliar with online banking.

“It is a shame that the banks are unable to share resources and provide a single banking hub in Alderley Edge – but when I asked about this as a possibility following the closure of RBS, I was told that it would not be possible for security reasons.”

Barclays said everyday transactions can be completed at the Post Office (located on West Street) or at its nearest alternative branches in Wilmslow and Macclesfield.

The bank said nine people regularly use the Alderley Edge branch who do not access its services in other ways.

The nearest free ATM is at the village’s Tesco Express store, around 100m away, and when Barclays closes this will be the only cash machine in Alderley Edge.

Barclays said: “All of our customers will receive a letter, our decision to close document and posters will be displayed in branch, and colleagues will be on hand to assist customers with any concerns they may have.

“We will be proactively engaging with local businesses and the wider community to discuss the alternative ways customers will be able to undertake their banking locally.

“We will be offering virtual ‘tea and teach’ sessions for customers wishing to explore digital banking and other alternatives to branch based banking.”
