Whitwick and Coalville Leisure Centre wins national recognition

Leisure centre staff are celebrating after picking up an award at a recent national industry event.

Whitwick and Coalville Leisure Centre in Leicestershire was recognised in the community involvement category at the National Fitness Awards.

The centre, run by operator Everyone Active saw off competition from six other shortlisted sites, having been chosen by a panel which included fitness entrepreneur Katie Bulmer-Cooke and fitness expert Dean Hodgkin.

It was the third time lucky, as the site has been nominated twice before in the National Fitness Awards.

Facilities at Whitwick and Coalville Leisure Centre include a 110-station gym, two swimming pools, three group fitness studios, an eight-court sports hall, a climbing wall, three squash courts, a sauna, a steam room and a spa pool as well as an adventure trail and a cafe.

‘Huge honour’

Judges were looking for teams which raise money for charity, work with local schools or senior citizens’ groups, increase awareness of health and fitness or go above and beyond to help their communities get healthier.

“It’s a huge honour to win at the National Fitness Awards and this reflects the hard work and dedication the site team have put in over the past year,” said leisure centre contract manager, Duncan Gibb.

“Led by the general manager, Adam Knight, they have done a fantastic job.

“We are so proud to support the physical and mental health of the local community and would like to thank all of our customers and partners for their ongoing support.”

‘Fantastic asset’

Cllr Michael Wyatt, portfolio holder at North West Leicestershire District Council, said he was delighted the centre had been recognised.

“This award is a testament to the incredible work the centre does to engage with our community and promote health and wellbeing” he said.

“The centre is a fantastic asset for north west Leicestershire, and we’re proud to see it making such a positive difference to people’s lives.”

Dominic Musgrave, National Fitness Awards director, added that the awards night was a great celebration of the fitness industry.

“This year’s winners should be very proud – the high standard of entries made it a tough job to select a final shortlist never mind a winner and runner-up in each category.”

“It was great to see so many gyms represented at the event. It was a wonderful evening and it was lovely to share in the celebrations of the winners.”
