Following a mini litter pick and AGM on Monday 16th July, Crewe Clean Team teamed up with 3rd SWC Scouts to clean up at Valley Park recently, in readiness for the first Valley Park Festival on Saturday 21st July.
Crewe Clean Team chairman David McDonald commented: “It was great to see such enthusiasm and energy!”
He explained: “The worst affected spots were around the path between Walthall Street and Wistaston Road and on the bank along Wistaston Road.
“Litter had been blowing from an overflowing bin, so that was sorted out.”
David continued: “I was ashamed that the youngsters had to see needles, disposable spoons and other obvious evidence of drug taking.”
He said: “More and more, I see and hear people who are only interested in blaming those less fortunate than them for everything that is ‘wrong’ in our town.
“We need to recognise that we have a collective responsibility for the behaviour of members of our society – our community – and that they are often not in a position to change without help from others.
“Thankfully, there are many selfless people who are helping.”
The young Scouts behaved responsibly and summoned adult help immediately – the Crewe Clean Team carries sharps boxes, tweezers and puncture-proof gloves which means that all items were dealt with safely.
As well as this, the relevant authorities have been informed and the items have been handed to the police.
Other items found included two highway cones and a bar stool, while aluminium cans and plastic bottles were separated from the rest of the litter for recycling.
David added: “Thank you to Rob for ferrying the equipment, Olwen for organising the cans and bottles and Jamie for having the original idea.
“Thanks must go chiefly, though, to the scouts who worked so hard to help in the preparations for the festival.”
