This took place firstly in London – at 11am on Saturday 10th September – before heralds carried the proclamation to be read in Belfast, Edinburgh and Cardiff today (Sunday 11th September).
In Cheshire, the proclamation will be read at Chester Town Hall by the High Sheriff of Cheshire, at 1pm on Sunday 11th September.
The borough’s town proclamations in Cheshire West will take place at 3pm on Sunday 11th September at the following locations:
- Ellesmere Port – outside the Civic Hall
- Neston – outside the Town Hall
- Northwich – outside Northwich Information Centre
- Winsford – outside Wyvern House
Members of the public are invited to attend.
The barrier outside Chester Town Hall will be closed for vehicles from 10.30am until the end of the proclamation event.
Hamilton Place will be closed from the junction with Crook Street during this period. Crook Street and Goss Street will remain open.
Blue badge holders visiting Chester on Sunday can use the council’s car parks as usual, and normal parking arrangements apply.
Flags at council buildings were raised to full mast at 11am on Saturday, to coincide with the reading of the principal proclamation.
At 1pm today (Sunday 11th September), flags will return to half-mast for the remainder of the mourning period.
A service of commemoration will take place at Chester Cathedral on Sunday 18th September 2022.
The service will also be live-streamed on Chester Cathedral’s YouTube channel.
Westfields, Sandbach
Cheshire East Council
Cheshire East Council will hold its official proclamation – announcing the succession of King Charles III – at the council offices, Westfields, in Sandbach at 3pm on Sunday 11th September 2022.
Immediately following the proclamation, there will be a short service of commemoration for the life of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II led by the Archdeacon of Macclesfield.
Town and parish councils will hold their own individual proclamations after this. Members of the public are invited to attend all events.
The proclamation at Westfields will be led by the mayor of Cheshire East Cllr David Marren accompanied by chief executive Dr Lorraine O’Donnell and the Archdeacon of Macclesfield, The Ven Ian Bishop.
It is customary for councils to hold their proclamation the day after the royal proclamation in London – this took place on Saturday, at St James’s Palace during a meeting of the Privy Council.
In Cheshire East, residents can expect to see the Union Flag raised to full mast for the event.
Flags will then be lowered to half-mast again for the period of mourning.
The King has stated that a period of mourning will continue for seven days after the funeral of The Queen.
Books of condolence have been opened at council offices in Macclesfield, Sandbach and Crewe.
Town and parish councils will also have their own books of condolence for residents to sign.
People can also leave messages of condolence on the Cheshire East Council website if they wish.
Leader Cllr Sam Corcoran and deputy leader Cllr Craig Browne, along with mayor Cllr David Marren, are sending messages of condolence to the royal family.
In addition, people are being invited to lay flowers at council buildings as a way of paying respect to The Queen.
