A farmer from Macclesfield has been nominated for a national farming award.
Danny Newton was nominated for the accolade by Macclesfield MP David Rutley.
Mr Newton runs a dairy farm in Gawsworth, and was put forward as part of a National Farmers Union (NFU) campaign to recognise farmers who play an important role in their local communities
The union said – alongside producing our food – farmers often go above and beyond in rural communities and it is important they are celebrated.
Mr Rutley nominated Mr Newton after seeing the work he does to host open day events at Trevors Close Farm where he educates and engages with the public.
Mr Newton helps spread the word about the world of farming and the work farmers do.
The Newton family’s 2022 open farm day attracted over 800 people and visitors were treated to a range of activities – from tractor and trailer tours to sheep shearing demonstrations.
People were also able to listen to talks about the jobs that have to be done on the farm, and they were able to handle baby chicks and see new born calves.
The event also gave the chance for the Newtons to share information about regenerative farming and how their farm is reducing its carbon footprint.
Danny is also one of the NFU North West farming ambassadors and was joined on the open day by other members who were on hand to answer questions and dish out local produce such as butter, cheese and cream.
Mr Newton has appeared on regional news programmes to speak about issues affecting farming and also to promoting Cheshire farming.
Mr Rutley said: “Farming is a much-valued part of the community in and around Macclesfield and I am grateful to all our local farmers for the important work they continue to do.
“I was pleased to nominate Danny for this award to highlight the impressive open days he has hosted and for being such a positive ambassador for farming.
“I wish him the best of luck as the awards progress.”
Regional winners of the inaugural Community Farming Hero awards will be announced on Back British Farming Day in Westminster on 14th September.
