Community radio station The Cat is applying for a licence to operate a local multiplex for south Cheshire, with the aim to start broadcasts in 2022.
The new multiplex service will enable new and existing digital radio stations to operate in the area.
South Cheshire DAB Ltd is a new not-for profit company set up jointly by The Cat, along with a team of accomplished local broadcasters and business people.
The group has joined forces to bring small scale DAB (digital radio) to Crewe, Nantwich, and the surrounding areas.
A spokesperson said: “Our ethos is to ensure that local broadcasters can reach their audience at a minimum cost, with profits re-invested in local radio.”
They added: “As technology moves on The Cat has been keeping up with this by expanding the FM into smart devices and a dedicated app, adding additional channels onto the digital mediums.
The next step for the Cat is DAB, the growing medium for radio in the UK and we look forward to being able to offer this service to out listeners.”
Small-scale DAB is a new method for transmitting digital radio that uses advances in software and low-cost computer technology to provide a flexible and inexpensive approach to terrestrial broadcast of digital radio services to a relatively small geographic area.
Studies show that radio remains as popular as ever with 89% of the adult population tuning in, and 67% of the population tuning in via digital radio.
As a non-profit, South Cheshire DAB Ltd hopes to keep costs as low as possible, giving access to both existing and new community and commercial radio stations, providing more choice to radio listeners across the Crewe and Nantwich areas.
