The latest phase of an £8.5m regeneration project in Cheshire has been given the go-ahead by council officials.
A new solar array is set to provide green energy for the revamped Ellesmere Port Market after Cheshire West and Chester Council said 242 solar panels would be installed on the roof of the Wellington Road building.
The array will occupy 480 sq m area of the roof and provide 101 kilowatt-peak power (kWp).
The scheme is part of the wider regeneration of the market, which will also see creation of a flexible events space and areas for community activities.
A planning officer’s report, said: “It is considered the solar array is appropriate in relation to its surroundings, it would not be readily visible from public vantage points due to the existing parapet wall and the proposed angle and position of the solar panels.”
It added: “It is considered that the proposed solar system would not cause harm to this amenity of the area.
“It is not thought to cause harm by way of glare on the occupiers of the neighbouring land.”
The building was formerly a supermarket and was converted into the market in the mid 2000s.
Approximately £8.5m will be spent on enhancing the market, with plans to improve the appearance and heating efficiency of the building.
A new children’s play area has already been opened and wi-fi installed.
There will also be improved public toilets – including a changing places toilet – and increased lighting.
The entrance to the market will be improved to create a multi-functional space for businesses and events as well as secure cycle parking.
A new flexible events space will be created in the existing flea market area, with the overall project expected to be completed next year.
