“It’s only a matter of weeks now before Wilmslow can experience its very own taste of the Deep South” – or at least that’s what we told you on 1st March 2020.
Yes, it certainly was Groundhog Day earlier this week, and here we are writing pretty much the same thing once again.
Of course, none of us predicted that first national lockdown, nor the subsequent ongoing impact the coronavirus pandemic has had on the hospitality industry.
A spokesperson for Hickory’s said of their Wilmslow ambitions: “This has been a place on our wish list for a long time,” anticipating that they’d be open by the end of April.
Sadly, that wasn’t to be, but in recent weeks locals have noticed more activity at the site on Altrincham Road as things start to come together ready for its opening – for real this time!
So, will it be opening any time soon?
We put that question to the brand in an email, and a spokesperson replied: “We’ve made great progress with the build but there is still a little more that needs to be done yet.”
They explained: “We’re unsure of a reopening date at the moment… once we have more information from the government with regards to when restaurants are able to reopen we will be able to share an opening date with you all.”
They added: “We’re incredibly excited to get going and we’ve had some great feedback so far from our neighbours. Fingers crossed it won’t be much longer!”
The brand – which started life after a road trip to the southern states – is taking on the building once occupied by the Boddington Arms pub (most recently operated by Harvester).
The Hickory’s website says: “On our travels we are always greeted like old friends and we just wanted to bottle the generosity of spirit and open hearted hospitality of the southern states.”
The new Hickory’s in Wilmslow will join the firm’s venues in Chester (the brand’s first) as well as Poynton (opened in 2019) and Crewe (also opened in 2019).
Hickory’s has a total of 11 branches across the country, with the Wilmslow opening set to be its twelfth.
