Hilary Pinnock of The Green Room Theatre, Wilmslow, writes…
Experience a poignant masterpiece of Irish theatre, portraying the strength and bravery of family and tradition.
The Green Room Theatre, Wilmslow, is delighted to commence its 2025/2026 season with the multi-award winning play by Irish playwright Brian Friel, Dancing at Lughnasa, directed by Victor Hassan.
Set in the 1930s, it’s harvest time in County Donegal and the locals are celebrating the pagan festival of Lughnasa.
The story centres around the household of the five poverty-stricken Mundy sisters who are only just managing to make ends meet.
Also in residence is their brother Jack and the youngest sister’s seven-year-old child Michael.
In depicting two days in the life of this menage, not only do we witness the dynamics of a group of people struggling in a difficult domestic situation, but also the wider world around them on the brink of change – whilst Christian and pagan traditions collide, the sisters fight to survive through personal battles, family love, loyalty and dance.
Dancing at Lughnasa won the 1991 Olivier award for best play of the year and the Evening Standard award for best play, the 1992 Tony award for best play and New York Drama Critics’ Circle award for best play.
Tickets for the Wilmslow Green Room production cost £13 (£10 for WGR members) and are available online via the theatre’s website: www.ticketsource.co.uk/greenroom
