Confidence – the order of the day at Rotary speaking competition

Shares

At the recent Primary School Speaking Competition staged each year in June by Wilmslow Dean Rotary Club, 20 year 6 pupils from eight different local schools kept the audience enthralled with their confident speeches.

Subjects varied, and included: Child Health, Can Children Shape the Future, Who’s Dying for Chocolate and Feminism.

Now in its third year, the competition gives pupils an opportunity to show their potential for public speaking in front of an audience of nearly 100 people.

Teams comprise of a chairperson, speaker and vote of thanks.

Each speaker has to give a timed 6-minute presentation of their chosen topic and a panel of experienced adjudicators ask questions and then give their constructive comments on the team performance.

Taking part this year were teams from: Park Royal Community School, Macclesfield; Lacey Green Primary Academy, Wilmslow; Baguley Hall School, Wythenshawe; Prestbury C of E School, Prestbury; Gorsey Bank Primary, Wilmslow; Bollington St John’s Primary, Bollington; Tithe Barn Primary, Burnage and Green End Primary, Stockport.

Each participant received a certificate of attendance and the winning team received a special winners certificate along with a £30 Amazon voucher.

Their school receives a winners certificate plus holds the winners trophy for a year.

Wilmslow Rotary president Carol Parry said: “What a great evening!

“It was a joy to see these talented young people working as a team, presenting topics that were both engaging and thought provoking, with such confidence and poise.

“All of the teams were a credit to their parents and schools and most importantly they did themselves proud!”

The overall winners this year were Tithe Barn School who explored ‘Plastic in our Oceans’.

Second place went to Green End Primary School and third was Lacey Green Primary Academy School.

Awards for ‘Best Speaker’ and ‘Best Vote of Thanks’ both came from Tithe Barn, while ‘Best Chairperson’ was awarded to Bollington St John’s Primary.
